In 1880, construction began on Ellsworth Avenue on what was to become the Laughlin Mansion, a two-story twelve room residence with a mansard roof. Built for Henry Laughlin of Laughlin and Jones Steel and his second wife Mary, they lived at the residence presumably until 1909, when they hired Wm. J. Carpenter to design Greylock Mansion in Chestnut Hill. Laughlin would later die at Greylock in 1922 at 83 years old. The Laughlin Mansion at Ellsworth Avenue was torn down and replaced in 1935 by five homes. At least one home, at 4903 Ellsworth Ave is still extant.
